Capitals sell out season tickets

The Washington Capitals have sold out all of their season ticket plans to the disappointment of many fans.

The only way to get tickets to Capitals games next season is to buy single game tickets or the 5 or 10-game plan.

While the team has always enjoyed a solid fanbase, things have really picked up in a big way over the past few years. ( Read More…)

Capitals looking to deal Semin

The Washington Capitals are looking to trade forward Alexander Semin and are asking for two prospects and a draft pick.

The Capitals have finally grown tired of Semin’s inconsistent play, especially in the postseason.

While Semin has immense talent, the team needs to find more consistent players that can be counted on night after night. ( Read More…)

Capitals sign Backstrom to 10-year deal

The Washington Capitals have signed Nicklas Backstrom to a 10-year contract worth $67 million.

The deal assures the Capitals of retaining Alexander Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom for the next decade.

Backstom said it was an easy contract to sign when he knew he could play alongside Ovechkin all that time.

It also doesn’t hurt that he was given big money and will play on a contending team for years to come.

It’s also worth mentioning that he will only be 32 when his contract is up, which could allow him to earn one more big payday before his career comes to an end.

Capitals supporting Boudreau

Despite their early playoff exit, the Washington Capitals are in full support of head coach Bruce Boudreau.

There was actually some talk initially that Boudreau could lose his job after such a disappointing finish.

The Capitals are saying just the opposite, anticipating that Boudreau will be the head coach for years to come.

Some blamed Boudreau for the team’s exit, saying that his style of plays was not meant for playoff hockey.

Washington now must decide what to do to ensure another such disappointment does not occur again next season.

Capitals stunned, eliminated by Canadiens

In the pivotal Game 7, the Washington Capitals came up short and were eliminated by the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1.

For the second straight game, Washington heavily outshot the Canadiens but were stonewalled by a hot goalie.

Alexander Ovechkin appeared to have scored a game-tying goal, but goalie interference took away the score.

He also had an assist, 10 shots on net and several hits, but it wasn’t enough to make up from poor performances from his teammates.

Mike Green in particular had another terrible game, and you have to wonder whether he might be sent somewhere else next season.

Capitals heading for Game 7

It’s been a crazy series for the Washington Capitals, and now it’s going to take seven games to decide it.

The Capitals could not solve goalie Jaroslav Halak, getting stoned 53 times in a 4-1 defeat in Montreal.

After needing a furious comeback to avoid going down 2-0 in the series, the Capitals took control to go up 3-1 with Game 5 at home.

A disappointing, narrow home loss left them facing a Game 6 in Montreal, and the Capitals ran into a scorching hot goaltender.

The Capitals must hope that a day off with cool off Halak, who was unbreakable for 60 minutes in Montreal.

Capitals stomp Canadiens, 5-1

The Washington Capitals picked up where they left off two nights ago with a 5-1 beatdown of the Montreal Canadiens.

The Capitals seemed to capture the momentum from their previous overtime win to carry it into a pivotal Game 3.

Semyon Varlamov got the start over Jose Theodore and was sensational, particularly in the first period.

Washington then took control of the game in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals.

Montreal tallied their only goal on a power play in the earl portion of the third period but was stymied the rest of the night.

Capitals rally to OT victory

Staring down what could have been an 0-2 playoff hole heading to Montreal, the Washington Capitals dug down deep and rallied for a 6-5 overtime win over the Candiens.

The victory evens the series up at one game a piece as the two teams head to Montreal for two straight games before returning to Washington for Game 5.

The Capitals fell behind 2-0 early in the game, forcing head coach Bruce Boudreau to make a change at goaltender and bench Jose Theodore.

Washington found itself down 4-1 in the third period before rallying to tie the game, but then again fell behind and managed to score the game-tying goal with just over a minute to play.

The Capitals wasted little time in the extra period, as Nicklas Backstrom sent home the game-winning wrister to send the Verizon Center into a frenzy.

Caps seek better showing in Game 2

By Bud L. Ellis

The Washington Capitals won 30 games at Verizon Center in the regular season. The Montreal Capitals won 39 games total.

That didn’t matter Thursday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, as the Canadians stunned the Caps in overtime, 3-2. Friday, the Caps tried to figure out what happened in that disappointing opener, and worked to avoid a repeat in Game 2 Saturday night.

Washington, which ran away with the top seed in the Eastern Conference with 121 points, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the opener. A team that scored 318 goals in the regular season went 0-for-4 on the power play in Game 1.

Nobody embodied the frustration more than Alexander Ovechkin, Washington’s 50-goal scorer. For the first time in 417 NHL games, Ovechkin failed to score a goal, record an assist or tally a shot on goal. Needless to say, Ovechkin has to step up for Washington to be successful in Game 2.

And the pressure suddenly is on for a team that looked like the unquestioned favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Lose again at home, and Washington would have to win four of the next five just to move into the conference semifinals.

Shocking loss puts Caps in hole as playoffs begin

By Bud L. Ellis

Alexander Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals opened the second season with a dud.

Ovechkin not only didn’t score in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals Thursday night, he didn’t even post a shot on goal. The rest of his Washington teammates also struggled, and as a result the team with the best regular-season record in the NHL finds itself down a game in the first round of the playoffs.

Tomas Plekanec scored 13:19 into overtime, sending No. 8-seed Montreal to a shocking 3-2 victory over the heavily favored Caps in Game 1 at Verizon Center. The loss now pushes the Caps into a bit of a corner entering Game 2 at home on Saturday night.

Certainly, Washington does not want to head north of the border down 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.

But the Caps will have to play better. Washington went 0-for-4 on the power play and got nothing from Ovechkin. Joe Corvo and Nicklas Backstrom scored for the Caps. Jose Theodore made 45 saves, but got beat by Plekanec on the game-winning goal.
