Capitals trade Varlamov
The Washington Capitals have traded goaltender Semyon Varlamov to the Colorado Avalanche for two draft picks.
The Capitals have a number of young, talented goalies, making at least one of them expendable this offseason.
Washington elected to trade Varlamov to make it clear who the team’s starting goaltender will be going forward, and that’s Michael Nuevirth.
Varlamov is certainly talented and showed a lot of promise during his time in Washington, but he also struggled to stay healthy and on the ice.
The team also added three veterans to the roster via free agency, and trade rumors continue to swirl around the inconsistent but talented Alexander Semin.
