Caps knocking on door of East lead after red-hot March

By Bud L. Ellis

With nine games left in the regular season, the Washington Capitals have crawled their way up the Eastern Conference standings.

From the middle of the pack, the Caps have used a torrid March to draw within two points of first-place Philadelphia. And that’s where Washington hits the ice Tuesday night, facing the Flyers with the ability to pull even atop the East with a victory in regulation. ( Read More…)

Caps add offense, experience in trade for Arnott

By Bud L. Ellis

The Washington Capitals knew they needed a scorer with playoff experience. That’s exactly what they got at Monday’s NHL trade deadline.

Washington landed a No. 2 center to add offensive punch to its lineup, trading David Steckel and next year’s second-round pick to New Jersey for Jason Arnott. ( Read More…)

Caps look to extend win streak, lead in East

By Bud L. Ellis

A 14-game winning streak. A 14-point lead in the conference standings.

The Washington Capitals look to extend both numbers with a trip to Canada, starting Wednesday at Montreal. The two-game road trip through the Great White North concludes Thursday with a contest against Ottawa (the Senators also have been red hot of late, including an 11-game winning streak).

The Caps take dead-aim Wednesday on matching the second-longest streak in NHL history, a 15-game win streak put together by the New York Islanders in 1981-82. Sweep the Canada swing, and the Caps would be one win away from the NHL record, 17 wins in a row by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Caps definitely have momentum on their side. For one, they’re leaving the D.C. area before another major snowstorm hits the nation’s capitol. For another, their last game out was monumental: a come-from-behind 5-4 overtime victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday at the Verizon Center.

Washington opens the road trip leading New Jersey by 14 points in the Eastern Conference standings.

Down three, Caps rally to push win streak to 14

By Bud L. Ellis

The amazing wave the Washington Capitals are riding reached new heights on Sunday.

Playing before a crowd that made it to Verizon Center despite two feet of snow on the ground, facing a 4-1 deficit against the hated Pittsburgh Penguins, their franchise-record winning streak hanging in the balance, the Caps rallied for an amazing 5-4 overtime victory.

Mike Knuble stuck home a rebound at 2:49 of overtime, giving Washington its 14th consecutive victory and sending the snow-weary fans inside Verizon Center into a wild celebration. The game was broadcast to a nationwide audience, and those who tuned in saw a team continue its historic surge.

The win streak is the third-longest in NHL history, behind the 1992-93 Penguins (17) and the 1981-82 Islanders (15). Washington goes for 15 in a row on Wednesday at Montreal.

It certainly didn’t look like the streak would continue into this week, though. Sidney Crosby scored twice for Pittsburgh in the first period. Alex Ovechkin made it 2-1 with a goal at the 9:01 mark of the second, but Jordan Staal scored twice in a 1:27 span of the second to make it 4-1 Pittsburgh.

But the Caps, who haven’t lost since Jan. 12, came back. Eric Fehr scored with 2:48 remaining in the second. Ovechkin scored his second of the game at the 6:51 mark of the third, then capped his hat trick and tied the game at 11:06 of the third.

In overtime, the Caps went on the power play and Ovechkin nearly won it, hitting the post with a shot. The rebound went to Knuble, who slammed it home to finish the storybook rally and keep the Caps’ streak alive.

The Caps lead New Jersey by 14 points in the Eastern Conference standings.

Caps gun for ninth win in a row as Panthers come to town

By Bud L. Ellis

The streaking Washington Capitals are right where they want to be as January ticks towards its conclusion.

At home.

The Caps look to win their ninth in a row, and extend their two-month stretch of dominance at the Verizon Center, when Washington welcomes in the Florida Panthers on Friday.

Since the middle of November, Washington is 12-1 at home. After Florida visits, Washington plays host to Tampa Bay on Sunday, the final day of what’s been a simply stunning month for a team that has rocketed to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Washington is 11-2 in January, including wins in 11 of its past 12 games and eight straight victories. The winning streak is the longest for the franchise since an eight-game streak in March 1989. Wins at home this weekend would make the streak 10, tying the franchise record set in 1983-84.

History is nice, but the here and now is the important part. Washington holds a six-point lead over New Jersey in the Eastern Conference. Florida, meanwhile, is in a dogfight with several teams for one of the final playoff spots in the East. The Panthers are tied with Philadelphia, the Rangers and the Canadians with 55 points in seventh. Boston, Tampa Bay and the Islanders are tied for 10th with 54 points.

Atlanta is sixth with 56 points. The Caps don’t have to worry about all that jockeying going on behind them, as they lead the Thrashers by 20 points and appear a lock to win a third-straight Southeast Division title.

Caps extend win streak to seven with rout of Isles

By Bud L. Ellis

Just like almost everything else they’ve seen in January, the Washington Capitals ran roughshod over the New York Islanders Tuesday night.

A seven-goal performance, sparked by a four-goal first period, pushed the Caps to their seventh-straight victory, 7-2. The seven goals also give Washington 202 on the season, the first team in the NHL to surpass 200 goals.

Washington sits atop the Eastern Conference with 74 points, a five-point lead over second-place New Jersey.

Alex Ovechkin, among the league leaders in scoring, did not light the lamp in this one. But the Caps didn’t need him to, as Alexander Semin scored twice in the four-goal first.

Brendan Morrison scored just 65 seconds into the game for Washington, which improved to 10-2 in January. Semin scored four minutes later, and goals from Mike Knuble and Semin in the final 1:47 of the first period made it 4-1 after one.

John Erskine scored his first goal in more than two years early in the second, and Jason Chimera scored later in the period to make it 6-2 after two. Brooks Laich closed the scoring in the third.

Jose Theodore played the first two periods in goal before leaving with a lower-body injury; the Caps say he is day-to-day. Michal Neuvirth likely will start Wednesday as the Caps open a three-game homestand with Anaheim. Neuvirth played a flawless third period against the Isles.

Ovechkin fuels Caps’ push toward June

By Bud L. Ellis

The Washington Capitals sit atop the Eastern Conference. They are a legitimate candidate to play for the Stanley Cup come June.

And to the surprise of nobody, Alex Ovechkin is a central driving force behind the Caps’ success.

Washington spent Monday idle, awaiting Tuesday night’s road game at the New York Islanders. Entering Monday’s slate, a glance across the NHL individual leaders revealed Ovechkin’s name time and time again:

Goals, second (33). Assists, seventh (37). Points, second (70). Plus-minus, first (+30). Shots, second (223). Power-play goals, ninth (eight). Game-winning goals, 13th (four).

It’s business as usual for the 24-year-old winger who continues to validate on a nightly basis why Washington chose him with the first overall pick in the 2004 Entry Draft.

Two years after scoring 65 goals in the regular season, Ovechkin isn’t quite at that pace. But with 32 games left, it’s likely Oveckin can reach 50 goals for the fourth time in five NHL seasons if he stays healthy. And, after totaling 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) in 14 playoff games last spring, Ovechkin now possesses the playoff experience many believe can only lead to bigger and better things.

And that path toward bigger and better just might lead all the way to June.

Caps continue torrid January with victory over Phoenix

By Bud L. Ellis

Nine wins out of the past 10. Six victories in a row. There’s just no slowing down the Washington Capitals right now.

The hottest team in the National Hockey League continued its torrid play Saturday night. Michal Neuvirth made 31 saves, and Eric Fehr’s power-play goal in the second period gave the Caps the lead for keeps in a 4-2 home victory over Phoenix.

For the Caps, the beat goes on. Now with a 33-12-6 record and 72 points, the Caps lead New Jersey by three points in the Eastern Conference standings. Only a pair of Western Conference teams, San Jose (76) and Chicago (74), has more points than the Caps.

The way Washington is playing, those two teams will be passed soon.

Saturday, the Caps fell behind the Coyotes 1-0 but tied the game five minutes later on a power-play goal by Brooks Laich. Fehr gave Washington a 2-1 lead at the 13:22 mark of the second period with a power-play score. Alexander Semin made it 3-1 four minutes later, and Alexander Ovechkin netted his 33rd on the season into any empty net with six seconds remaining.

Washington travels to New York to face the Islanders on Tuesday, then ends January with three consecutive home games. With Saturday’s win, the Caps are a sparkling 18-3-3 on home ice.
